Romy Lee is an Irish artist based between Cork, Ireland and Stuttgart, Germany. She is currently studying Fine Art at the State Academy of Art and Design Stuttgart. She took part in exchange programs at Hongik University, Seoul, South Korea and at Accademia di Belle Arti, Macerata, Italy. Romy’s work spans many medium including but not limited to drawing, performance, installation, sculpture, painting and free writings.
Romy Lee‘s work deals with questions of origin, migration, linguistic and cultural identity. How are we shaped by collective or individual memory? How does multilingualism and multiculturalism change our position in the world that surrounds us and our position to others in this world? How does it change our self-perception, way of thinking and identity? What connects us with others and how do we overcome parallels of similarities and unfamiliarity. How do we perceive borders, navigate them, and walk through our daily life with inner boundaries, boundaries of body in space and society?
Using narration throughout her work, Lee uses a balance of humour and softness to approach her concepts. While materiality and the use of found objects also plays a great role in her practise.
Romy has exhibited in various locations across Ireland, Italy, Germany and South Korea.
